Working and Skilled Visas (Subclass 485/189/491)

Who Is It For?

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work after you have finished your studies.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): This visa is for invited workers, eligible New Zealand citizens and eligibile Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491): A visa for skilled people nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia.

Basic Eligibility

  • Subclass 485: must be under 50 years of age, hold and eligible visa, have held a student visa in the last 6 months, have a recent qualification in a CIRCOS-registered course, nominate one stream only and attached specified evidence when you apply.
  • Subclass 189: dependent on the stream, see below.
  • Subclass 491: must be nominated by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you, have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list, have suitable skills assessment for the occupation, be invited to apply and satisfy the points test.

Graduate Work Stream (Subclass 485)

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily. You must:

  • Be under 50 years of age.
  • Hold and eligible visa.
  • Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (not required for applications lodged between 01/07/2022 and 30/06/2023).
  • Have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation.

With This Visa You Can

  • Live, study and work in Australia temporarily.
  • Bring your family members.

Overview

Post-Study Work Stream (Subclass 485)

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian insitution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. You must:

  • Have applied for and been granted your first student visa on or after 5 November 2011.
  • Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Have a recent degree in a CIRCOS-registered course.

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia for between 2 to 4 years after you have finished your studies.
  • Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.

Overview

Second Post-Study Work Stream (Subclass 485)

This visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. You must:

  • Hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream and have held a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, as the main applicant.
  • Have a degree in a CRICOS-registered course from an education institution based in an eligible designated regional area, that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
  • Have lived in an eligible designated regional area for at least 2 years before applying for the second Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream. 

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia for between 1 and 2 years.
  • Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.

Overview

Replacement Stream (Subclass 485)

This visa is for current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders who lost time on their original visa due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It lets you live, work and study in Australia temporarily. You must:

  • Make an application before 1 January 2027.
  • Have held a relevant Temporary Graduate visa that was granted before 15 December 2021.
  • Have lost time on your visa because of Australia’s COVID-19 travel restrictions.
  • Not have had your Temporary Graduate visa, or any visa granted after you held your Temporary Graduate visa, cancelled, unless it was cancelled because you asked for it to be.

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia for between 18 months to 5 years.
  • Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.
  • Bring your family with you.

Points-Tested Stream (Subclass 189)

This visa lets invited workers with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. You must:

  • Enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare.
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen.

Overview

Hong Kong Stream (Subclass 189)

This visa lets eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders who have demonstrated commitment to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently. You must:

  • Hold a Hong Kong passport or a British National (Overseas) passport.
  • Meet certain visa and residence requirements.

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia indefinitely.
  • Work and study in Australia.
  • Enrol in Australia’s public healthcare scheme, Medicare.
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen.

Overview

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa- Main Applicant (Subclass 491)

This is a provisional visa. It is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia. You must:

  • Be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you.
  • Have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list.
  • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation.
  • Be invited to apply.
  • Satisfy the points test.

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia for 5 years from the date your visa is granted.
  • Live, work and study in a designated region of Australia.
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.
  • Apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which starts on 16 November 2022. You can’t apply for other permanent visas until you have held your subclass 491 visa for 3 years.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa- Subsequent Entrant (Subclass 491)

This visa is for a member of the family unit of someone who holds a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

With This Visa You Can

  • Stay in Australia while the visa is valid.
  • Live, work and study in a designated region of Australia.
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.
  • Apply for permanent residency, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191).
