Working and Skilled Visas (Subclass 485/189/491)
Who Is It For?
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work after you have finished your studies.
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): This visa is for invited workers, eligible New Zealand citizens and eligibile Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491): A visa for skilled people nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia.
Basic Eligibility
- Subclass 485: must be under 50 years of age, hold and eligible visa, have held a student visa in the last 6 months, have a recent qualification in a CIRCOS-registered course, nominate one stream only and attached specified evidence when you apply.
- Subclass 189: dependent on the stream, see below.
- Subclass 491: must be nominated by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you, have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list, have suitable skills assessment for the occupation, be invited to apply and satisfy the points test.

Graduate Work Stream (Subclass 485)
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily. You must:
- Be under 50 years of age.
- Hold and eligible visa.
- Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
- Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (not required for applications lodged between 01/07/2022 and 30/06/2023).
- Have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation.
With This Visa You Can
- Live, study and work in Australia temporarily.
- Bring your family members.
Overview
Usually for 18 months. This has temporarily increased to 24 months for visas granted from 1 December 2021. This is a temporary visa. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay up to 5 years. This visa is granted with multiple entry. You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa, however, current and temporary visa holders from Hong Kong will also have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.
AUD1,730.00 for the primary applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. Subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge. You might also have to pay for:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You must be inside Australia but not in immigration clearance when you apply and when your application is granted. Graduates impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions may also be able to apply for, and be granted this visa outside Australia during the concession period (from 1 December 2021). Subsequent entrants can be in or outside Australia when they apply and when the visa is granted.
- 25% of applications: 72 days
- 50% of applications: 5 months
- 75% of applications: 10 months
- 90% of applications: 13 months
- You must be under 50 years of age.
- Your visa application will only be processed if:
- You are the main holder of a current student visa (but not one supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister).
- You held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now have a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B, granted on the basis of a valid application for a visa.
- You held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now hold a substantive visa.
- You are outside Australia and you hold or have held an eligible student visa (but not one supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister).
- Note: to be eligible for this visa you must have completed your course in the 6 months immediately before the day you apply. This visa can’t be granted if you were previously granted a subclass 485 or a subclass 476 visa as a primary visa holder.
- Meet the Australian study requirement.
- Have skills and qualifications that Australia needs. You will need to:
- Nominate 1 occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
- Have a degree, diploma or trade qualification closely related to that occupation.
- Be assessed by a relevant assessing authority as having skills suitable for that occupation.
- You must nominate the occupation when you apply, or we can’t process your visa application. You can’t change the occupation you nominate after you apply. The qualification must be closely related to that occupation.
- Note: this is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023.
- You must either hold a valid passport from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, or prove your English proficiency. To do this, you must show evidence that in the last 3 years, you achieved:
- Have adequate health insurance.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- Not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused.
The following condition must be attached to this visa:
8501- Maintain adequate health insurance.
Post-Study Work Stream (Subclass 485)
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian insitution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. You must:
- Have applied for and been granted your first student visa on or after 5 November 2011.
- Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
- Have a recent degree in a CIRCOS-registered course.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia for between 2 to 4 years after you have finished your studies.
- Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification.
- Bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years.
- Masters by research and masters by coursework: 3 years.
- Masters (extended): 3 years.
- Doctoral degree: 4 years.
- Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders who successfully complete a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree: 5 years.
You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa, however, you may be eligible for a second Post-Study Work Stream visa. Current and future temporary graduate visa holders from Hong Kong will also have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.
AUD1,730.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. Subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge. You might also have to pay for:

You can be inside Australia but not in immigration clearance when you apply, and when your application in granted.
- 25% of applications: less than 1 day
- 50% of applications: 14 days
- 75% of applications: 30 days
- 90% of applications: 6 months
- You must be under 50 years of age.
- This stream is only available if you applied for, and were granted, your first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. Your visa application will be processed if:
- You are the main holder of a current student visa, (but not one supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister).
- You held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now have a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B, granted on the basis of a valid application for a visa.
- You held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now hold a substantive visa.
- You are outside Australia and you hold or have held an eligible student visa, (but not one supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister).
- To be eligible for this visa you must have completed your course in the 6 months immediately before the day you apply.
- The qualifications you completed must be an eligible degree:
- Bachelor degree.
- Bachelor (honours) degree.
- Masters by coursework degree.
- Masters (extended) degree.
- Masters by research degree.
- Doctoral degree.
- In the past 6 months before you applied for this visa you must have met the Australian study requirement. You willl meet this if you are awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification and:
- Your course was a CRICOS-registered course.
- You successfully completed all course requirements.
- The study was in English.
- You completed your course as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) study.
- You completed your course in Australia in not less than 16 calendar months.
- You held an Australian study visa that allowed you to study.
- Your course must have been with an Australian education provider who is registered on CRICOS and offer degree-level programs.
- You must hold a valid passport from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, or prove your English proficiency. To do this, you must show evidence that in the last 3 years, you achieved:
- Have adequate health insurance.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.

8610- Live, work and study only in designated regional area.
Second Post-Study Work Stream (Subclass 485)
This visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. You must:
- Hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream and have held a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, as the main applicant.
- Have a degree in a CRICOS-registered course from an education institution based in an eligible designated regional area, that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
- Have lived in an eligible designated regional area for at least 2 years before applying for the second Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia for between 1 and 2 years.
- Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.
Overview
Between 1 to 2 years. This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on where you studied and graduated from as the holder of a student visa and where you live as the holder of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or your Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream. If you:
- Studied and live in Category 2 area (1 year).
- Studied and live in Catgeory 3 area (2 years).
You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.
AUD680.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you and subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge. You might also have to pay for:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You and your accompanying dependants must be in Australia to apply for a second Temporary Graduate post-study work stream visa. Subsequent entrants can be in or outside Australia when they apply and when their visa is granted.
Processing times are not available.
- You must be under 50 years of age.
This stream is only available if you:
- Were granted your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream; or
- Were granted a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream based on holding your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
- You must have obtained your qualification that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, from an Australian education provider who is registered on CRICOS and offer degree-level programs. The campus that you studied at must have been based in a designated regional area.
- Have adequate health insurance.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.

Replacement Stream (Subclass 485)
This visa is for current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders who lost time on their original visa due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It lets you live, work and study in Australia temporarily. You must:
- Make an application before 1 January 2027.
- Have held a relevant Temporary Graduate visa that was granted before 15 December 2021.
- Have lost time on your visa because of Australia’s COVID-19 travel restrictions.
- Not have had your Temporary Graduate visa, or any visa granted after you held your Temporary Graduate visa, cancelled, unless it was cancelled because you asked for it to be.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia for between 18 months to 5 years.
- Travel, work or study in Australia during your stay.
- Bring your family with you.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification, or the Temporary Graduate visa you held previously.
The stay period has been temporarily increased from 18 months to 2 years for visas granted from 1 December 2021. You should check the current period that applies when you lodge your application.
AUD1,730.00 for the primary visa applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. Subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge. You might also have to pay for:

- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You can be inside or outside of Australia, but not in immigration clearance when you apply, and when your application is granted. Subsequent entrants can be in or outside Australia when they apply and when their visa is granted.
Processing times are not available.
- You must be under 50 years of age.
- To apply for this visa you must either:
- Hold a Temporary Graduate visa as the main holder.
- Have held a Temporary Graduate visa as the main holder and currently hold another substantive visa, or a Bridging visa A or Bridging visa B.
- You will be eligible to apply if, as the main holder:
- You have held a Graduate Work stream or first Post Study Work stream Temporary Graduate visa that was:
- Granted before 15 December 2021.
- In effect on or after 1 February 2020.
- Have lost time on your visa because of Australia’s COVID-19 travel restrictions. This means:
- If you were in Australia when your original Temporary Graduate visa was granted, you have been outside of Australia while holding this visa between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021.
- If you were outside Australia when your original Temporary Graduate visa was granted, you entered Australia on that visa, and the departed Australia on that visa before 15 December 2021.
- Have not had your Temporary Graduate visa, or any visa granted after you held your Temporary Graduate visa, cancelled, unless it was cancelled because you asked for it to be, or the decision to cancel the visa was set aside by the Tribunal.
- You have held a Graduate Work stream or first Post Study Work stream Temporary Graduate visa that was:
- Apply before 1 January 2027.
- Be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance.
- Have adequate health insurance.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
8501- Maintain adequate health insurance.
8610- Live, work and study only in designated regional area.
Points-Tested Stream (Subclass 189)
This visa lets invited workers with skills we need, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. You must:
- Have an occupation on the skilled occupation list.
- Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation.
- Be invited to apply for this visa.
- Satisfy the points test.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia permanently.
- Work and study in Australia.
- Enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare.
- Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
- If eligible, become an Australian citizen.
Overview
This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant. You become a permanent resident on the day we grant the visa. For citizenship purposes, your permanent residence starts on the day:
- We grant the visa if you are in Australia.
- You enter Australia on this visa if you are outside Australia.
AUD4,240.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. You might have to pay an extra charge for any applicant 18 years old or older who has less than functional English. This charge is the second instalment. Pay it only when you’re asked to. You will only get charged if the visa is going to be granted. The second instalment charge for family members is AUD4,885.
You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made on your application, but not in immigration clearance. If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be processed.
- 25% of applications: 3 months
- 50% of applications: 5 months
- 75% of applications: 5 months
- 90% of application: 5 months
- You can only apply for this visa if you’re invited. Submit an expression of interest (EOI) before you apply for the visa. After you have submitted an EOI, you will be ranked against other intending applicants and might be invited to apply for the visa.
- For your application to be valid, you must declare that you have a suitable skills assessment at the time of invitation.
- You must be under 45 years of age when you’re invited to apply for the visa.
- You can still apply for the visa if you turn 45 after you’re invited to apply.
- If you turn 45 after you submit your EOI but before we you’re invited to apply, you will not be invited to apply.
- Be able to score 65 points or more.
- When you submit your EOI in SkillSelect you will be given an indicative points score based on the claims you have made. If you do not obtain a score of 65 points you will not be invited to apply for this visa.
- If you’re not invited to apply for the visa, your invitation will state the number of points that you must score when we assess your application for grant of the visa (this score may be higher than 65 points, depending on your claims in the EOI).

- At the time of invitation, you must have at least competent English.
- Your occupation must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) Point-Tested stream.
- You and any family who apply for the visa with you must meet the health requirement.
- You and family members aged 16 years and over who apply for the visa with you must meet the character requirement.
- If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you sign or accept the Australian Values Statement.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
There are no conditions attached to this visa.
Hong Kong Stream (Subclass 189)
This visa lets eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders who have demonstrated commitment to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently. You must:
- Hold a Hong Kong passport or a British National (Overseas) passport.
- Meet certain visa and residence requirements.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia indefinitely.
- Work and study in Australia.
- Enrol in Australia’s public healthcare scheme, Medicare.
- Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
- If eligible, become an Australian citizen.
Overview
This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date your visa is granted.
AUD4,240 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. The visa application charges are paid in two instalments. The first instalment is 20% of the total visa application charge payable at time of lodgement. The second instalment is the remaining 80% of the visa application charge. The second charge must be paid before we grant you your visa. You might also have to pay for:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You must be in Australia and holding a Subclass 444 visa when you apply for the visa. Any family members included in your application can be in or outside of Australia when you apply. However, if they are in Australia, they must hold a substantive visa or bridging A, B or C visa.
- 25% of applications: 11 months
- 50% of applications: 17 months
- 75% of applications: 21 months
- 90% of applications: 25 months
- You must hold an eligible visa at the time your visa application is made, and you must have held that visa for at least 4 years prior to that date.
- An eligible visa is a subclass 457, 482 or 485 visa that was granted to you on the basis of satisfying the primary criteria.
- If your eligble visa was granted before 9 July 2020, your visa must not expire after 8 July 2025.
- If your eligble visa was granted on or after 9 July 2020, your visa must be valid for 5 years.
- An eligible visa is a subclass 457, 482 or 485 visa that was granted to you on the basis of satisfying the primary criteria.
- You must hold a Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport at the time your visa application is made.
- You must have been usually resident in Australia for a continuous period of at least 4 years immediately before the date of your application.
- You must have complied with the conditions attached to your eligible visa when in Australia. This requirement applies for the whole period you hold the visa(s).
- You must have functional English or pay the second installment of the visa application charge when asked.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
There are no conditions attached to this visa.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa- Main Applicant (Subclass 491)
This is a provisional visa. It is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia. You must:
- Be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you.
- Have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list.
- Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation.
- Be invited to apply.
- Satisfy the points test.
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia for 5 years from the date your visa is granted.
- Live, work and study in a designated region of Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.
- Apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which starts on 16 November 2022. You can’t apply for other permanent visas until you have held your subclass 491 visa for 3 years.
Overview
5 years. This is a temporary visa. You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.
From AUD4,240.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you.

- If you indicate in your EOI that you will be sponsored by an eligible relative the Department may invite you to apply for a visa in an invitation round.
- All state and territory government agencies have their own criteria for deciding who they will nominate:
- Your sponsor must be:
- 18 years old or older.
- Usually resident in a designated area of Australia.
- Be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Be your eligible relative or your partner’s eligible relative if your partner is also applying for this visa.
- You must be aged under 45 to be invited to apply for the visa.
- You can still apply for the visa if you turn 45 after you’re invited to apply.
- If you turn 45 after you submit your EOI but before your invited to apply you will not receive an invite.
- For your application to be valid, you must declare that you have a suitable skills assessment at time of invitation.
- When you submit your EOI in SkillSelect you will be given an indicative points score based on the claims you have made. If you do not obtain a score of 65 points you will not be invited to apply for this visa.
- If we do invite you to apply for the visa, your invitation will state the number of points that you must score when we assess your application for grant of the visa (this score may be higher than 65 points, depending on your claims in the EOI).

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa- Subsequent Entrant (Subclass 491)
This visa is for a member of the family unit of someone who holds a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).
With This Visa You Can
- Stay in Australia while the visa is valid.
- Live, work and study in a designated region of Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.
- Apply for permanent residency, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191).

This is a temporary visa. You can stay until the visa that your family member holds ends. You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.
From AUD4,240.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you.

If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be valid.
- 25% of applications: 6 months
- 50% of applications: 10 months
- 75% of applications: 18 months
- 90% of applications: 19 months
- You must be one of the members of family unit, of a subclass 491 visa holder.
- If you are in Australia when you lodge your application you must hold a substantive visa or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa.
- You and family members aged 18 years or older who are applying for the visa with you must either:
- Have at least functional English.
- Pay a second instalment when asked to do so.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia.
- Confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you sign an Australian Values Statement.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
8578- Must notify change of address, email, phone, passport details.
8579- Live, study work in a designated regional area.
8580- Must provide evidence of live/work/study addresses on request.
8581- Must attend an interview if requested.
